Phokan's Hardships,
before the turning point

Phokan Singh, 32, from Chekora in Bharatpur district, is the sole breadwinner for his family of six and works as the village cleaner while managing a small goatery, yet he struggled to meet basic needs and often bartered services for food. His life changed after joining the DBJUP intervention, where he received goats, chicks, a shed, training, and exposure visits, helping him strengthen his livestock activities and move into a stable livelihood.

With regular support from LHWRF veterinarians, Phokan's livestock has flourished and his rearing costs have reduced significantly. He now owns 18 goats, sells eggs at INR 30 each, and recently earned around INR 40,000 by selling seven goats at good market prices. Improved market linkages have enabled him to access main mandis and secure fair, timely returns, significantly strengthening his financial stability.

Phokan has also been able to invest in his family's future. With his earnings, he bought a motorcycle. He opened his account at the Grameen Bank, safeguarding his savings and managing his finances more efficiently. With his financial situation stabilized, he could repay a loan of INR 30,000 borrowed from a moneylender, ensuring he can maintain good financial health. He can now afford private hospitals and better healthcare services for his family.

After DBJUP, Phokan gained financial stability and the joy of supporting his family.
He now dreams bigger and aims to expand his livestock activities, driven by passion, grit, and a constant desire to grow. He believes learning never stops and each new skill will strengthen his livelihood, and with confidence and determination, he is steadily building a brighter and more prosperous future.
